Are all emerging infectious diseases harmful?

Infections that have recently appeared in the population, whose geographic range is increasing day by day or threatens to increase in near future, are called emerging infectious diseases. Emerging diseases can be caused by previously undetected infectious agents or known agents that have spread. The emergence of new infectious diseases or the re-emergence of old infectious diseases can be caused naturally by the evolution of pathogens or the interaction of human population.

Influenza or flu is an example of emerging infectious disease which is caused due to both natural and human factors. Influenza virus has the ability to change its genetic information. Major changes in the virus can cause pandemics as the human immune system is not prepared to recognize and defend against the new pathogens. The recent outbreak of deadly coronavirus disease which is related to RNA viruses, it can be caused to birds and mammals. They cause mild illness which includes cold and cough which are also caused by other viruses and can range to severe respiratory tract infections which are caused by SARS, MERS, and COVID-19.

However few emerging diseases few can be turned to pandemics and few can be cured by preventing and controlling them. There are many ways to prevent and control infectious diseases like maintaining cleanliness
in your surroundings, washing your hands with soap or water frequently, covering your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough and avoiding contact with sick people or sharing personal items with them.
